  4.     Last month a federal judge in Indianapolis listened to
  5. arguments over whether four 6th century mosaics bought in
  6. Switzerland by an American art dealer had actually been stolen
  7. from Cyprus after the island was invaded by Turkish soldiers in
  8. 1974. Last week Judge James E. Noland announced his decision:
  9. the Byzantine religious works that suburban Indianapolis art
  10. dealer Peg Goldberg purchased for $1.2 million last year and
  11. tried to sell to the Getty Museum in California, are legally the
  12. property of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Cyprus and must
  13. be returned.

  15.     Noland accepted the argument of the church and the Greek
  16. Cypriot government that the works had been stripped from a
  17. small village church on the Turkish-controlled side of the
  18. island and illegally offered for sale on the international art
  19. market. Said Archbishop Chrysostomos of the Cyprus Church: "This
  20. just decision by the American court will help end the illegal
  21. marketing of looted archaeological items worldwide." Museum
  22. directors expect the decision to set an important precedent for
  23. regulating the antiquities market.
